Overview

Food4All is a startup fighting food waste with an app displaying close-to-expiry supermarket products.

Primarily, users could create shopping lists of discounted foods in the free mobile app, and go to the store to purchase them. There was not yet any payment or reservation service within the app.

In 2021, the C-suite executives planned to expand their services to partner with restaurants, cafes, and bakeries to sell unsold items within our app.

I was in charge of designing the solution.

The Problem

Supermarkets are too difficult to integrate into their POS systems and therefore offer reservations and in-app purchasing for users.

Instead, we wanted to monetise the app by expanding the scope of our services.

  • Competitors had similar offerings, but not yet in Luxembourg.
  • In-app purchasing would allow users to reserve items
  • Pick-up the same day only
  • Partners could upload any products on offer

Constraints

The CEO didn't want to change te home screen.

It was currently a list of partner buttons, severely limiting how I would integrate the new service into the app. She had got these partners on board by promising this free promotional real estate and wasn't ready to change it.

Beta Launch

In a rush to get to market, we launched within 3 months.

Wih little use testing or research, it wasn't pretty or perfect but it was a beta and did the job. From here we were able to start testing the real solution with partners an users and identify opportunities for improvement.

Focus Group

In November 2021, I ran a focus group discussing the new service offering and app experience.

Unsurprisingly, users didn't like that the new Takeaway service was hidden ona second tab within the app, but I wanted to dig deeper into their shopping habits and needs.

Prioritising Solutions

A needed move from country-based browsing to location-based.

Given our unique geo-location in Luxembourg, there are people living in France, Germany, or Switzerland commuting in to Luxembourg on a daily basis — or vice versa.

It wasn't uncommon for someone living in Luxembourg to cross the border to France or Germany to do groceries.

Our app was currently segmented by country, so you'd need to switch countries to see products across the border.

Users prioritised location as the #1 deciding factor for where they shop.

With this information, we were able to convince stakeholders that we could display partners on the home screen in a different way — by proximity.

Since users wanted to see what was close to them, we could display the stores in a map and a list view and toggle between the two views.

Users mostly shopped at the same locations 80% of the time

Given this information, we prioritised their favourited stores to the top of the list. This way they could easily select and view the products available at their favourite stores without needed to scroll through the app looking for it.

User Testing

Users were now able to locate items closest to them regardless of country

No matter where you were, you could see al the stores on a map and theapp wouldautomatically show youthe stores closest to you.

We fixed some flaws in our Takeaway user flows

We added a floating acton widget to he home screen when the use had an active order to pick up, this way they didn't need tonavigate to their profile to find their order to show th merchant.

Result

The new service increased weekly active users by 1900%.

Users can find and purchase items for pick up from restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores, while merchants can create offers and manage their orders using the seller dashboard.

  • Lead the new service design with in-app purchasing and location-based browsing.
  • Designed new merchant dashboard for product and order management.
  • Launched new service with 2000+ app downloads.

I worked with Shannon for two years on many different projects. During that period not only was she full of creative energy and ideas, but she had amazing problem solving ability and was always up for some brainstorming.
